URSULA BROOKBANK
Fulvia's Flight, a tale of transformation in the life of a Roman princess
2022 — work in progress
Maquette for a movie. Black foil, clay, wire, sandstone, size variable.
NFS
At the age of fourteen Fulvia weds Roman emperor Caracalla in a lavish ceremony. She wears true ivory slippers with layer upon layer of rare and fancy things to adorn her beauty and golden peacock tongue is served. Soon the frugal emperor realizes that Fulvia's selfish desires are insatiable and his riches are dwindling. She mocks and castigates his miserliness and becomes ugly from her excess. He loathes the sight of her. To be free of his worry and rage Fulvia indulges in the alpine waters of the roman baths. In the sanctity of the baths a calm breeze washes over her, nature’s powers seep into her pores giving Fulvia the gift of transformation. She perfects becoming a fish, a pine tree, a sacred elephant all in a golden glow. Her need for luxury fades and with ease her natural beauty is restored. It's a revelation. Fulvia confesses her powers, and the terrified emperor swiftly banishes her to the far away Aeolian Islands. The sea crossing is turbulent, the small boat is tossed emptying Fulvia into deep waters, in a flash she is a fish and safe. While she rests on a kelp bed the princess is greeted by a gilthead sea bream who praises her grace and agility, useful as landfall approaches. On the volcanic island Fulvia instinctively gathers a riches of honey, olives and molten rock minerals to nourish her growth into a tall parasol pine with wide limbs just at the top. News reaches Caracalla that Fulvia is using her gifts, if she is a tree perhaps next as an elephant she will trample the crops, or devour precious seeds, or crush the fragile empire. Fearing disaster, he plots to poison her roots. As an elegant crow Fulvia quickly takes flight from a long tree branch never to return.
